There’s often stories in the news about how school water fountains are contaminated with germs and the school water pipes are a bacterial minefield so it’s high time schools started cleaning up their act before all the school drinking fountains are taken out from the halls!
The latest news story was from Oregan in the United States where a student was so adamant that the school drinking fountains were more dirty than the school toilets that he conducted a series of tests to prove his theory correct. For his English assignment he collected swabs from four of the school’s water fountains and one of the toilets to test the bacteria content. The tests came back in favour of the toilet water, with all results from the water fountains coming back infused with bacteria.
His classmates and teachers were shocked at the results and it quickly spurred on the decision makers in the school to replace the old water fountains with sparkling new ones which will be sanitised on a much more regular basis. Now the results of this test would never come back in favour of the toilet water in any of the schools around here, if you keep your water fountains sanitised regularly you will never have this problem.
If you know your school is in dire need of a new drinking fountain please feel free to contact Drinking Water Fountains and they will be more than happy to provide you with bacteria free fountains for your school!

INCREASING DRINKABLE WATER SUPPLY IN THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES
Having a clean drinkable water supply is something every human on the planet should have access to. Water is essential to our survival and everyday life, without it our health would diminish significantly. However, many countries in the third world still do not have access to clean drinking water.
Fortunate nations such as the United Kingdom and the United States have trade associations who govern the safety of their country’s drinking water supply. Luckily for the developing countries, these associations sometimes delve into supporting and encouraging the developing countries with the progression of their drinking water supply.
Last year, the Drinking Fountain Association (DFA) donated money to a village in Zambia to assist in the education of hygiene and install a drinking water well, and provide sanitisation equipment. The village never had access to a drinking water well prior to this, in the past the children would have to walk for more than two hours to collect water from a small unclean waterway. Zambia was chosen as it was rated 165th out of 177 countries in the Human Development Index. The lack of access to clean water and sanitation, coupled with disease has left more than half of Zambian children with severe illnesses and malnutrition. After the donation from the DFA children can now bathe safely and regularly in clean water as well as grow nutritious crops with the clean water from the well.
It’s important to remember there are people in the world who need help from more fortunate countries, especially in the area of clean water supply. Drinking Water Fountains is aware of the help that is required and will be working on a plan to support developing nations in the near future.

Having an adequate fresh water supply in your life is essential. Whether you are at home, work or at the gym, it’s important to be well hydrated and it’s important as a business owner to ensure your staff have easy access to fresh water. You might already have a water cooler installed but you might like to look at other options to see which way is best to go to save you money and provide the best water supply to you and your staff.
No matter which sector you are in whether it is construction, health, leisure, education or the public sector it’s important to have the right cooler or fountain for your work environment.
Things to consider include:
- Whether you want a bottled water cooler or a drinking water fountain?
- How many water coolers or fountains you might need?
- Do you need to cater for children?
- What sort of look do you want, sophisticated or simple?
- Do you want to rent or buy?
There are differences between the bottled water coolers and the drinking water fountains, the main one being cost. A bottled water cooler will end up costing more over a 12 month period than an installed drinking water fountain. With a drinking water fountain there’s no sanitisation fee to pay, nor is there a fee to pay for water bottles or a water bottle deposit, just a monthly machine fee.
If you choose a drinking water fountain you will also benefit from no heavy lifting of water bottles, no storage problems, no paperwork, no delivery issues and best of all, you will never run out of water as you’ll have a constant supply of fresh water 365 days a year. If you decide to go with a water fountain from Drinking Water Fountains all rental prices include installation, full servicing and six monthly sanitisation and filter changes.

DRINKING WATER FOUNTAINS FOR THE OFFICE
It’s important to have a clean water supply in the office environment that is easily accessible to all staff members, not only to prevent dehydration, but to increase productivity amongst staff. Studies have shown people who drink more water and are well hydrated can perform at an optimal level throughout the day compared to those who do not drink much water. The standard amount of water recommended for adults is eight glasses per day. Although there’s no standard formula for determining this as everyone is different and it depends how much you weigh, how active you are and what climate you live in as to how much water is beneficial for you, however the general recommendation is eight glasses.
Being dehydrated is not ideal in any situation, least of all at work where you need your energy and mind power. Being dehydrated can drain you of your energy, cause you to be tired and can lead to serious consequences so it’s important to keep hydrated and keep up your water intake at home and in the office.
Having a drinking water fountain, or bottled water cooler, in walking distance to your desk will help you in many ways to keep hydrated. If you do not have easy access to a water fountain or cooler at work, let someone in your workplace know immediately so arrangements can be made for one to be installed.
If you are thinking of installing a drinking water fountain in your office there are a number of different water fountains to consider. There’s floorstanding or wall mounted from a variety of different brands. Drinking Water Fountains is proud to stock both floorstanding and wall mountains fountains from trusted brands such as Elkay and the aesthetically pleasing Enki drinking water fountain available for rent or to purchase.

A recent study conducted by the Journal of Paediatrics shows that it is possible to reduce children becoming overweight by introducing drinking water fountains throughout the school; handing out water bottles to the children in class and having teachers use lesson plans that included messages about healthy water consumption.
The study was conducted on 32 elementary schools in socially deprived areas of two German cities. The average age of each child in the study was eight years old. The study separated the schools into two groups, an intervention group and a control group. In the intervention group schools drinking water fountains were installed and teachers presented lessons to the children to encourage water intake. The control group did not receive any water fountains or any lessons on healthy water consumption.
The results showed that the risk of children becoming overweight in the intervention group was reduced by 31% compared with the control group and water consumption increased by 1.1 glasses per day in the intervention group.
The conclusion of the study was, “Our environmental and educational, school-based intervention proved to be effective in the prevention of overweight among children in elementary school, even in a population from socially deprived areas.”
If having more drinking water fountains installed in schools can make this much of a difference to the prevention of obesity, it would make sense to encourage every school to have a sensible number of drinking water fountains installed and to monitor the number of current fountains to ensure there are enough for the number of children who attend the school. It is also important to ensure the current water fountains are maintained and replaced if faulty for health and safety reasons. It’s vital to ensure children are taught about how to stay healthy with regular water intake from an early age so they are equipped with the knowledge for the rest of their lives.

Pressures on local and central governments to provide adequate sources of drinking water for staff have often sparked much debate and led to detailed discussions on the pros and cons of bottled water.
This has recently been seen in Canada where a push by 50 municipalities in eight provinces has led to a ban on the sale of bottled water in many of their buildings. These municipal authorities have been encouraged by central government to replace small pack water with the installation of drinking water fountains. Despite widespread acceptance, the ban of small pack bottles has come across pockets of resistance.
Canadian municial authorities in Brockville, pushing to have bottled water replaced by drinking water fountains has suffered a set back in passing a “resolution that would encourage the city to promote municipal water and make it available in drinking fountains at public buildings where feasible.”

A Brock University programming co-ordinator is doing all that she can to get more water fountains installed, or at least have some hydration stations on campus so students can fill up their water bottles instead of having to shell out $2.50 per bottle from the vending machine, or buy the alternative of sugary soft drinks to quench their thirsts.
Milica Njegovan discovering the noticeable absence of any water fountains in the plans for three new buildings underway at the University and after completing a sustainability study on campus where she started counting water fountains as she examined the importance of water only to find there were none.
“Unless there’s a staff demand for them or there’s student demand for them, (facilities management) doesn’t even think about it,” Njegovan said.
Njegovan said that people used to see water fountains as unclean but now fountains are maintained regularly and people are trying to cut back on the amount of bottled water they buy for environmental and cost reasons so water fountains are the only way people can refill their stainless steel water bottles and keep their personal costs down.
“It’s obviously really concerning. Slowly students are having no choice and access to water,” Njegovan said.
