]]> Following last week’s blog, in which we had a brief examination of the fountain in the courtyard at the Royal Academy of Art, we’ve been looking for more special drinking water fountains around the country that will bring you joy and pleasure simply by looking upon them. Alas, the whole drinking water fountains thing didn’t really work for us this week either, but we found out all about the Alnwick Garden fountain, in the heart of Northumberland, some of which fascinating info we’d like to share with you. This fountain is stunning and unique, as its nozzles (all plated with a chrome finish, incidentally, to make them look extra pretty) create a dramatic cascade for visitors to marvel at, as the jets spurt beautifully into the pool below. Poetry in motion, as created by Jacques & Peter Wirtz. Unlike some of the other drinking water fountains in Britain’s parks, we wouldn’t recommend ingesting anything from this one, even though the water is specially conditioned.

]]> If you, like us here at drinking water fountains, have found yourself out and about in our beautiful country and have marvelled at some of the wonderful and innovative drinking, and non drinking water fountains all over the place, you’re probably wondering why we haven’t written any blogs about them. For this, dear reader, we sincerely apologise, and it is now we begin to rectify this situation. We kick off our new four-part blog with a quick critique of the fountain in the courtyard of the Royal Academy of Art in central London. The fountain itself is in the courtyard of the Royal Academy, which hosts exhibitions all year round, and attracts visitors from all over the world. Designed by Dickson Jones, the fountain has twelve vertical cascading jets, which alternate between each other, and can also be controlled/varied if the trustees of the Academy ever get bored of the sequence (unlikely, we think). Not only this, but the formation of the nozzles, if viewed from above, are set in the pattern of the various astronomical star formations. Spectacular.

- If you’re drinking from a public fountain, it’s recommended/commonly observed etiquette that one should refrain from placing one’s whole mouth over the nozzle, and instead sip delicately from the spurt of water.
- If you’re concerned about drinking straight from a fountain, why not fill up a water bottle instead? That way you’ll also have a drink to keep you refreshed throughout the day.
- Drinking water fountains are not litter trays; resist the temptation to leave rubbish in them, and they’ll stay nice for a lot longer.

]]> Following worrying findings that drinking water fountains across the UK’s parks have been falling into disrepair, and thus are unfit for the public to drink from, Authorities have decided to spend some time deciding which fountains standing on land owned by the Royal Parks Foundation, are to be renovated and thus become more appealing to the people of Britain once again. A report in the Telegraph has also stated that the worldwide company, Tiffany & Co., usually more well-known for their production of ornate and expensive jewellery, have donated a staggering £850, 000, for the repair and renovation of the fountain in the middle of St James’ Park lake, which the Royal Parks Foundation have said, one finished, will help wildlife by aerating the water, bringing more oxygen into it, thus encouraging breeding and flourishing of new species.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, also added his comment, saying that the donation from Tiffany was invaluable, and helping to bring back the drinking water fountains that so many members of the public enjoyed and appreciated in the past, whilst visiting the Royal Parks.

]]> We English love a good old bit of campaigning; standing up for what we believe in and making sure the people with the power hear us doing so. We particularly love making a noise about our health, more so if it concerns our children and other young people across the country. Since the release of the shocking report that drinking water fountains in public parks are falling into disrepair, and have been for some time, there has been a lot going on…
The writers at My Real England, a blog site created in celebration of everything from/about our glorious country, have joined forces with the Join the Refill campaign, to help get better drinking units in public places, so that we can have access to clean drinking water when we need it- a basic human right, many would argue. The two forces combined promote events and petitions, trying to persuade our government to follow the example of others and build thousands of drinking water fountains, all over the country, for public convenience. ]]> It’s a sad state of affairs when we, the British public, do not have access to clean drinking water, even in places of activity and recreation such as public parks. Across the country, it has been reported that drinking water fountains have fallen into disrepair as a result of neglect from local authorities. During the study, carried out by he Children’s Food Campaign, who work to improve the health of young people, it was found that only 11% of the green spaces across the UK have drinking water fountains, and of these, generally only 2/3 of the units were dispensing.
The main concern of the charity was that children would be pushed to consume fizzy and sugary drinks in an attempt to quench their thirst, instead of picking a healthier, complimentary option. With so much emphasis on fighting child obesity, and cutting down on heart disease in the future, how are the Powers That Be helping?
What are your views on this? Does your local park provide fountains for your children to drink from, or are you persuaded to let them indulge in unhealthier options? ]]> Following the unprecedented success of last week’s fairy tale taster, we’re letting ourselves be inspired by our drinking water fountains once again, and are bringing you, faithful reader, a reminder, or maybe a first introduction, to one of the most magical and wonderful watery fairytales ever written for children.
The Water Babies, written by Charles Kingsley, began as a series of short stories for Macmillan’s Magazine, the popularity of which encouraged Kingsley to publish the full-length novel in 1863. The story follows a young chimney sweep called Tom, who falls into a river, tragically dies, but magically turns into a water baby, and begins a journey of moral discovery, during which he meets various characters such as the infamous fairy, Ms. Doasyoouwouldbedoneby. Tom learns that by doing things which he may not like, being only very young, but are the right thing to do, he will be able to return to land and live the rest of his life as he did before.
Of course, we don’t want to spoil the story for those who don’t know the whole thing, so we’ll leave our synopsis at that. ]]> We all love a good fairy tale, with princes and princesses, possibly the odd slaying of an evil dragon, or even a shape-shifting elf. We at drinking water fountains particularly enjoy those stories which revolve around that wonderful, life-giving substance that spurts from our fountains- lovely jubbly water.
This week we’re bringing you a Grimm Fairy Tale, The Water of Life. Known for their somewhat dark moral tales, the Brothers Grimm tell of a King, far, far away, who was near death and desperate need of treatment. His three sons, the princes, each decided in turn to set out and find the much celebrated “Water of Life”, which would cure the king instantly. Facing dangerous paths and evil elves, only the youngest of the three brothers made it to the enchanted castle, within which the well, containing the water of life, resided. But the other princes, greedy for praise and the possibility of inheriting the kingdom, stole the water from the younger prince, and took the credit for healing the king. The youngest prince was exiled from the castle….
Like all good stories, we don’t really want to tell you the ending, as that would ruin the surprise. We love fairytales of all shapes and sizes, and suggest that you get reading to find out if the prince ever got his deserved reward. Alas, this has not always been the case, as electronic advances in the last couple of decades would have us believe.
Back in the day, people across the world relied on their drinking water fountains to wake them up. Ok, so it maybe wasn’t as simple as all that; they would drink ample amounts of water before they went to sleep, with the hope that they would wake up early in the morning, wanting to rush to the bathroom. This method proved successful, as we all know how difficult it is to sleep when you’re busting to ‘go’, and many an employee continued to arrive at work on time to cuddle the pigs, or chase the chickens.
